What is YouTube Ads?

YouTube Ads are video ads on YouTube and Google video partners, bought through Google Ads (Video campaigns) or Performance Max. YouTube is one of Google’s largest surfaces and a core channel for video-first creative in media buying.

Billing is usually CPM or CPV (cost per view); performance goals use the Google tag and conversion optimization. Video pairs with view-through conversions: a user sees the ad, does not click, but converts later — Google may credit an assisted conversion within the attribution window.

Main formats

  • Skippable in-stream. Before or mid-roll; skip after 5 seconds. A view counts at 30 seconds or completion.
  • Non-skippable in-stream. 15–20 seconds without skip — high contact rate, higher user friction.
  • Bumper ads. Up to 6 seconds, non-skippable — reach and frequency, weak direct response.
  • In-feed video ads. Cards in search, home, and suggested feeds — closer to discovery than interruption.
  • Masthead. Premium home placement — branding, rare in arbitrage.

Targeting

Demographics, interests, custom intent (keywords as signals), placements on channels/videos, remarketing from site visitors and Customer Match lists. Mobile apps tie into App campaigns. Traffic quality varies by channel topic: kids’ and premium content can shift CR dramatically.

Use in arbitrage

YouTube scales cold traffic for VSLs, reviews, and news-style angles in nutra and finance. Funnel: video ad → pre-landing / landing → offer; gclid and UTM on the link; conversions in Google Ads and the tracker. Video CTR is lower than search, but a strong hook can deliver competitive lead costs.

Limitations

Google policies on medical claims, gambling, counterfeit, and shocking content. Video review takes longer than static banners. Violations stop campaigns and risk account sanctions. Sensitive niches may need certifications (e.g., gambling licenses in allowed GEOs).
