What is native advertising?

Native advertising (sponsored content) is paid advertising that matches the style and format of surrounding platform content: “recommended articles,” sponsored feed posts, “from around the web” widgets under news. The word native reflects visual and editorial coherence with the host media.

Definition and distinctions

Unlike classic 728×90 banners, native units look like content cards with headline, thumbnail, and source. A close relative is the advertorial. Native reduces ad avoidance — users recognize ads later — so regulators (e.g., the FTC in the US) require clear labels: “Ad,” “Sponsored,” “Promoted.”

Formats (IAB taxonomy)

  • In-feed — ads inside news or social feeds (post-like).
  • Recommendation widgets — “Read next,” “From around the web” (Taboola, Outbrain, etc.).
  • Search ads — text listings visually similar to organic results.
  • Promoted listings — sponsored positions in marketplaces.
  • In-ad native — contextual creative inside standard IAB containers.

Open vs closed platforms

Closed platforms serve ads only on one property (Promoted Tweets, VK sponsored posts, Telegram Sponsored). Open platforms rotate one ad across thousands of sites via DSP/SSP and RTB auctions. Arbitrage buyers often use open native networks for scale and closed platforms for precise targeting.

Buying and metrics

Billing includes CPM, CPC, or CPA depending on the network. Teams track CTR, landing CR, EPC, and ROI. Headlines and thumbnails mimic editorial clickbait — networks and offers may reject misleading claims.

Tracking

Clicks pass through tracking URLs with placement and creative macros in sub_id. Postback records conversions. View-through is less common than in video; last-click on the click dominates.

Criticism

Studies show that even with “Sponsored” labels, some users treat native as editorial content. Platforms balance monetization and media trust. In arbitrage, risk arises when “news-style” creatives misrepresent the offer (policy violation).
