What is an Ad Campaign?
An ad campaign is a set of settings in an ad cabinet for one marketing goal: budget, schedule, targeting, creatives, optimization objective, and bids. In Meta and similar platforms the campaign is the top level; inside are ad sets / ad groups and individual ads.
In tracking, “campaign” is a separate entity: a unique tracking URL, flow (landing and offer chain), link to a traffic source and domain. One Facebook ad campaign may map to one tracker campaign, but at scale teams often create multiple tracker campaigns per ad set to split reporting.
Structure in the ad cabinet
- Campaign — objective (traffic, conversions, app installs), campaign budget (CBO) or limits below.
- Ad set / Ad group — audience, GEO, placements, schedule, bid strategy.
- Ad — creative: image, video, copy, link with tracking URL.
Key settings
- Budget — daily or lifetime; affects how fast the algorithm learns.
- Targeting — demographics, interests, custom and lookalike audiences, exclusions.
- Optimization — for clicks, landing page views, conversions (pixel/CAPI events).
- Bid strategy — manual, lowest cost, target CPA/ROAS.
Campaign lifecycle
Typical phases: test (small budget, several creatives) → review CTR, CPC, early CR → scale winners → daily optimization (pause high-CPA ad sets) → stop on negative ROI or exhausted offer cap. Platform algorithms have a learning phase — sudden budget or targeting changes reset stability.
Link to the tracker
The campaign tracking URL carries IDs for reporting: campaign alias, sub_id from cabinet macros. On conversion, network postback matches the click; pixels or S2S send events back to the ad cabinet. Without a correct click ↔ conversion ↔ Meta/Google event chain, optimization is blind.
Moderation and statuses
Campaigns can be active, paused, learning limited, or disapproved. Rejecting one ad does not always stop the whole campaign — replace creative or landing. Repeated policy violations lead to account restrictions or bans.
Meta and TikTok track a “learning phase” while the algorithm gathers roughly 50 conversions (varies by objective) for stable optimization. Frequent targeting edits during learning reset the phase and temporarily worsen CPA.
Vs “campaign” in CPA slang
Colloquially “campaign” may mean the full funnel (source + creatives + landing + offer), not only the Ads Manager entity. Tracker docs usually distinguish “cabinet campaign” vs “tracker campaign.”
Tracker naming often mirrors buying structure: “FB — US — nutra — v3” instead of the cabinet label. That makes reports easier when one ad account holds dozens of ad sets and hundreds of ads.
