What is a Tracking Domain?

A tracking domain is a dedicated hostname that routes paid clicks through a tracker before the user reaches a landing page or offer. In traffic arbitrage, it is separated from the landing hostname so clicks, click ids, and destinations can be managed without rewriting ad creatives.

Purpose

Ad platforms review the domain in the ad. When an offer or landing changes, you update tracker settings instead of rebuilding ads. Multiple campaigns can share one tracking domain with different aliases. Domain warming on an isolated host limits risk to the main brand site.

Typical flow: click.example.com → tracker → landing.other.com → affiliate offer. SSL and correct DNS are required for HTTPS redirects.

Technical requirements

  • DNS (A/CNAME) and valid SSL to tracker infrastructure.
  • 302/301 redirects preserving sub ids and UTM tags.
  • Uptime monitoring: slow redirects hurt CR.

Practice

Teams maintain domain pools and rotate on disapprovals. The tracking domain is central to redirect tracking; with cloaking, bot filters run here before the money page.
