What is TikTok Ads?

TikTok Ads (TikTok For Business) is TikTok’s paid traffic platform across TikTok and the Pangle partner network. Campaigns run in TikTok Ads Manager; formats focus on short vertical video and mobile Gen Z / Millennial audiences.

TikTok is a leading social source after Meta for e-commerce, mobile apps, subscriptions, and impulse purchases. Billing includes CPM, CPC, and oCPM optimized for conversion, lead, or app install (CPI).

Ad formats

  • In-Feed Ads. Native video in the For You feed — core performance format.
  • Spark Ads. Boost organic posts (yours or creators’) — higher trust, less “ad” feel.
  • TopView / Brand Takeover. Premium open-app placements — reach, rare in arbitrage.
  • Collection / Shopping ads. Product catalogs for e-com via TikTok Shop or external stores.

Tracking

The TikTok Pixel (browser) and Events API (server events) send conversions for optimization — similar to Meta CAPI. ttclid in the URL identifies the click. With a tracker: campaign URL → landing with pixel → conversion postback; at scale, Events API helps deduplicate against the pixel. Apps use the TikTok SDK and SAN integrations.

Audiences and creative

Targeting by interests, behavior, demographics, and devices; custom and lookalike audiences from pixel/app events. TikTok’s algorithm is creative-heavy: UGC style, fast hooks, captions, and native delivery often beat studio ads. Arbitrage teams test many short videos per offer; winners scale on ROAS and CPA.

Moderation and GEO

TikTok moderates strictly: adult, gambling, crypto, misleading health, before/after imagery. Available GEOs and verticals shift with policy. Violations mean disapprovals or ad account blocks. White hat funnels with transparent landings and proper disclaimers last longer; grey/black tactics quickly lose accounts and domains.
