What is Pop Traffic?
Pop traffic is users acquired via pop-up and pop-under formats: a new window or tab opens with an ad on click or page load. Pop-under opens under the active window and is less intrusive for publishers; pop-up appears on top of content.
The channel delivers cheap volume with low intent; common for gambling, utilities, app installs, dating. CR is lower than search or warm social, but with the right GEO and landing, ROI can work at scale.
Sources and pricing
Dedicated pop networks, RTB exchanges with pop format, direct deals on entertainment and file-sharing sites. Pricing: CPM, CPV, sometimes CPC. Targeting: GEO, device, OS, carrier, site category (mainstream vs. adult).
Tech and UX
Browsers and extensions block some pops; mobile WebView behaves differently from desktop Chrome. Multiple redirects raise bounce. Landings must load fast — users often close the tab within seconds.
Moderation and quality
Adult and aggressive creatives are allowed on many pop sources, but the offer and post-landing must match advertiser rules. Bot traffic and iframe fraud drive disputes; watch tracker fraud metrics and network approval rate.
