What is Telegram Ads?

Telegram advertising spans two related but distinct buying channels: the official Telegram Ads platform and direct or marketplace channel placements (native posts from channel owners). Telegram (launched in 2013 by the Durov brothers) evolved into a major media surface of channels, bots, and mini-apps — advertising became a natural monetization layer.

Telegram Ads (official platform)

In 2021 Telegram introduced an ad platform for short text ads in public channels with at least 1,000 subscribers. Ads appear as separate posts labeled “Sponsored” and, per Telegram’s design, are not injected into private chats.

Official ad characteristics:

  • Format — short text (length limits), link to a channel or external destination (per policy).
  • Billing — primarily auction-based CPM.
  • Targeting — channel topic categories; channels opt in to showing ads.
  • Moderation — strict category limits (crypto, finance, adult, political content have faced tightening rules).

Native channel buys

Before and alongside Telegram Ads, the market relied on direct buys: admins publish sponsored posts for fixed rates (24h, 48h, permanent). Marketplaces match advertisers to channels and provide reach metrics. For arbitrage this resembles native and social traffic: the creative is the post itself; the click is the in-post link.

Role in media buying

Telegram is common for crypto, finance newsletters, education, e-commerce, and subscriptions in CIS and global markets. Buyers evaluate CPM/CPC, bot vs landing retention, subscriber quality, and compliance with both platform and affiliate network rules.

Tracking

Clicks pass through tracker campaign URLs with source macros. Conversions return via postback. Official Telegram Ads campaigns rely on in-platform impression and click stats rather than a classic external pixel like Meta or Google.
